Melbourne-based development Reservoir Station has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 2020 Victorian Premier’s Design Awards.

Designed in collaboration with Genton, the project has been named in the Architecture Design category alongside a vast array of submissions including Rod Laver Arena, RMIT Capitol Theatre and La Trobe University Sports Park.

The awards highlight projects across eight categories including architectural, product, service, fashion, digital and communication design, and design strategy.

Reservoir Station Landscape Architect and McGregor Coxall Associate Director, Nick Griffin, says it’s a landmark achievement for the project and its collaborators.

“The calibre of submissions in this year’s awards is a testament to the innovation and individuality of local design firms,” said Griffin. “I’d like to congratulate the Genton team on their unique architecture design and wish the project all the success in the next round of judging.”

Incorporating an elevated rail corridor, Reservoir Station now stands as a physical and cultural link between the central community’s high streets (Edwardes Street and Broadway) to create an accommodating, intuitive and socially conscious public space.

Tasked with the landscape design component of the Darebin-based transport interchange, Griffin’s approach was centred around the need to accommodate the prospering suburb while integrating a raft of sustainable initiatives in a project that incorporated recycled glass sand in the concrete, extensive WSUD and maximising canopy cover.

“Our approach to design was centred around intuitive wayfinding and the experience of the transport interchange user,” said Griffin.

“We took a multifaceted approach, utilising each MCGC discipline of urban design, landscape and environment to get the best outcome.

“Working within MTM (Metro Trains Melbourne) guidelines, we looked to maximise canopy cover within the rail corridor while maximising WSUD and promoting walkability and cycling connections.”

Finalists will now be considered by a panel of design and architecture experts to determine category winners and the overall winner. The winners will be announced at the annual Victorian Premier’s Design Awards ceremony which will be held as part of Melbourne Design Week in March 2021.

About the Victorian Premier Design Awards

The Victorian Premier’s Design Awards were established in 1996 to acknowledge the Victorian designers and businesses that display excellence in the way they use design. The awards are delivered by Good Design Australia on behalf of the Victorian Government.

The awards provide an opportunity for businesses and the community to better understand the role of design in making products, services, spaces and experiences more functional, safe, efficient and attractive.

The awards also raise awareness about the impact design can have on productivity and business outcomes and the role design plays in tackling the challenges of the day to shape a better environment and society.

This year, there were 97 finalists from a record 365 submissions.
