Construction has begun on NewSpace - the University of Newcastle’s $95 million landmark education precinct in the heart of Newcastle'sCBD. Recently novated to preferred contractor Hansen Yunken, McGregor Coxall, collaborating with Lyons architects, is designing the public domain for this significant project.

McGregor Coxall design director Christian Borchert said “NewSpace’s public realm is shaping as a key seeding initiative for the city of Newcastle and is closely aligned with the city’s wider renewal strategy. NewSpace will help to better connect and integrate the civic precinct into central Newcastle and present a new space for the city\".

The precinct’s public domain will maximise connections and the exchange of ideas between the university and the city, encouraging engagement with public art and providing a forum for events such as moonlight cinemas or open lectures. The aim is to create a civic place that is an active destination year-round on week days, weekends and evenings. The new 10-storey NewSpace building, due for completion in December 2016, will also have an outdoor learning space located on a small roof terrace on level 5.
