McGregor Coxall has been announced as the landscape architect for the Sydney Modern Project, a major expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Working in collaboration with the selected architects for the project Tokyo based architectural and design firm SANAA and the Art Gallery New South Wales we will design the public domain and gardens for the site together with facilitating the Gallery’s integration within the precinct including The Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens. The Sydney Modern Project will transform the under-utilised site to the north of the existing Gallery, strengthening links with the local community and improving access between the Gallery, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House, the CBD and Woolloomooloo. The design will preserve the two 19th-century facades of the existing Gallery, protect heritage trees and retain The Domain’s much-used playing fields.

The concept design for the Sydney Modern Project engages strongly with the surrounding landscape and communities. Supported by the cultural plaza and flexible outdoor public spaces the buildings can take maximum advantage of the Royal Botanic Gardens backdrop. The expanded Gallery will become a cultural icon by juxtaposing the cultural heritage of the existing building with the modern fabric of a 21st century art museum. McGregor Coxall has designed some of Sydney's iconic harbour-front public projects and a number of award winning arts and cultural projects around Australia including the National Gallery of Australia Australian Garden and GASP near MONA in Hobart.

Having delivered the new entrance and Australian Garden at the National Gallery of Australia, our team understands fully the masterplanning and delivery complexities of extending a large art museum whilst maintaining visitor operations and gallery functions. McGregor Coxall founding Director Adrian McGregor said

“This project is an opportunity to leave a globally significant cultural legacy for Sydney befitting our wonderful harbour and the landscape heritage of Farm Cove.”
