CLEANER WATERWAYS FOR RIVER CATCHMENTS News / New Project / 01.09.2017

McGregor Coxall recently embarked on Sydney Water’s Waterway Health Improvement Program, a regionally important project that will transform Sydney’s most prominent river catchments by significantly reducing the impact of stormwater pollution. As part of Sydney Water’s strategy to enhance the liveability of Sydney, the project will improve waterway health and enhance urban environments at various sites along the Parramatta River, Cooks River and Georges River.

Working in close collaboration with Sydney Water and multiple councils, McGregor Coxall are developing masterplans for each site. This will ensure that the works delivered by Sydney Water provide the maximum benefits for the local community and accommodate any future improvements planned by local councils. The multi-disciplinary team will then deliver detailed concept designs and tender documentation to enable construction and implementation of the works. In parallel with the concept development, the team is undertaking an extensive community and stakeholder engagement program.

Improving waterway health will enrich the ecological and social value of these waterways and enhance the natural and built environment for dozens of communities.

Quick stats:

- The program encapsulates various sites along the Cooks River, Georges River and Parramatta River catchments

- The program spans across 8 councils

- Enhancements include Stormwater treatment systems including swales, bioretention systems, wetlands and waterway naturalisation works

- The program will improve waterway health by removing sediment and nutrient flows, together with a reduction in volume and intensity of stormwater flows from contributing catchments

- The program will improve the appearance of the rivers by reducing litter and pollutants

- The program will increase the capability of Sydney Water and councils to undertake similar projects in the future.
