McGregor Coxall were engaged to produce the Open Space Strategy for West Belconnen, a proposed 21st Century Garden Suburb straddling the ACT/NSW border. The 1623 hectare development will be home to 30,000 people and has been accepted as a Green Star Communities Pilot Project, aiming for a 6 star rating. The site is bounded by a 579 hectare River Corridor Conservation Area, which protects nationally significant ecological communities along the Murrumbidgee River. The development presents a unique opportunity for re-thinking the way new residential communities are integrated with existing ecological systems and extensive sustainable urban agriculture.

The re-use of an existing landfill site will utilize industrial ecology as a foundation for new business opportunities. Additional opportunities include the incorporation of urban agriculture and an urban farm, alternative energy production and programing 87ha of land located within transmission line easements. These explorations will result in the creation of a world leading community, consistent with the aims of the Green Building Council.

As part of the open space strategy, McGregor Coxall has developed a suite of street typologies which integrate community and ecological functions into the street network. The Open Space Strategy will drive the development of the urban form, connecting the community with the natural environment and presenting new experiences and opportunities for the residents of West Belconnen.
