SOUTHMEAD COMMUNITY MASTERPLAN News / New Project / 19.07.2018

The Southmead Development Trust invited design teams to participate in a limited design competition for the redevelopment of the Glencoyne Square area of Southmead. McGregor Coxall teamed up with Alec French and gcp Architects to develop a scheme that would regenerate Southmead’s local centre. Two major design moves were proposed to enhance public life in the area. Glencoyne Community Spine reunites the north and south of Southmead though the creation of new public facilities including a new playground, a community activated Square and a flexible market zone. Supporting the aspirations for a sustainable and community focussed design, the Glencoyne Greenway is re-imagined as an ecological corridor that brings nature and community together through seeded long grasses, grassy picnic spaces, a walking loop, BMX track, urban skate park and new community centre. Underpinning the project is a flexible four phase delivery framework that embraces a kit of parts philosophy to provide flexibility during implementation. The application of Green and Blue infrastructure unlocks a £3m Housing Infrastructure Fund, supporting the creation 150 homes in phase 1, inspiring a new community that fosters a healthy and happy environment.
