University of Sydney Business School

John Holland Pty Ltd / Darlington, Australia

The University of Sydney Business School public domain has been designed as a contemporary higher education ‘plexus’ for more than 2000 students. It is a connected network of external spaces that have a hierarchy of use including outdoor learning spaces, hang spaces and laneways for pedestrian circulation. With 9,100 square metres of light-filled flexible teaching and learning space, the purpose-built Abercrombie Building has been designed to inspire generations of business leaders to come.

The school precinct is integrated into the existing street and lane network of the surrounding campus to form a ‘sticky’ environment that encourages students to remain on site outside of formal lessons. The design maximises opportunity for learning by incorporating outdoor power for mobile computing, wifi, and a large amphitheatre for lectures. The building was designed around a giant existing blue gum tree and features sustainable green roof technology and Australian native species to encourage urban birds.
