Australia India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI)

World Resource Institute / New Delhi, India

Commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Australia-India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI) aims to work towards a resilient water sensitive city vision based on the holistic management of integrated water cycles. As the lead consultant of the AIWASI Community Demonstration Project (CDP) consortium, McGregor Coxall are tasked to establish bespoke water management and sanitation frameworks based on two pilot communities in New Delhi, India across a four-year design and implementation cycle.

The key objective of the project is to strengthen South-East Asian city-level water governance and propose tailored urban water solutions that support vulnerable and disadvantaged communities by granting them access to reliable, safe water and sanitation services. Phase one of the project details analysis and selection of two locations in New Delhi, employing spatial intelligence analysis and mapping to determine two suitable sites to design and demonstrate exemplar Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) and Nature-Based Solutions.

A polluted riverbank cluttered with trash and debris, including plastic and metal waste. The sky is hazy with clouds, illuminated by the setting sun. Buildings and power lines are visible in the distant background. This scene of environmental neglect underscores the urgency for initiatives like AIWASI, aimed at improving water security for Australia and India.
A murky canal surrounded by overgrown grass and scattered litter, with a faded brick wall lining its banks. The background features distant buildings under a hazy sky and a tall power line structure to the right, reminiscent of areas in need of attention under the Australia India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI).
An open trench with exposed pipes, part of the AIWASI Water Initiative, runs alongside a road in an underdeveloped area. Dirt and debris surround the trench, and a brick structure stands nearby. A few vehicles and trees are visible in the background along the dusty road.
A group of people walks along a pathway beside a canal or drainage area in an urban neighborhood. Buildings are visible on both sides, some unfinished or under construction. Electrical wires hang overhead, and the sky is clear with a hint of sunset, highlighting the efforts of the Australia India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI).
