NewSpace

Lyons Architects / Newcastle, NSW

McGregor Coxall in collaboration with Lyons Architecture and EJE Architects were appointed by University of Newcastle to design the NeW Space, a new type of Student Learning and Meeting Hub within the Civic Centre of Newcastle. The NeW Space Project is an opportunity to create a campus that will be a catalyst for remaking both the physical and cultural heart of the City of Newcastle. NeW Space is conceived as being a hub connecting the life of the City with the life of the University. The external spaces are carefully connected to the outer public domain via a series of laneways and plazas in order to achieve a fine grain urban framework ready to be filled with public life and retail activity – a first step of the Newcastle Renewal Strategy. The landscape concept establishes a seamless topography to the external and internal spaces referencing a pre-european landscape. A dunal amphitheatre within the heart of the university courtyard offers opportunities for students and the public to congregate for a range of daytime and night time activities.
