HARKNESS MEMORIAL MASTERPLAN AWARDED PINEAPPLE FOR INTERNATIONAL FUTURE PLACE
We are thrilled to announce that the reimagined Harkness Memorial Masterplan has been awarded the prestigious Pineapple Award for International Future Place by The Developer and Festival of Place.
This honour recognises a commitment to remembrance, reconciliation, and regenerative practices.
McGregor Coxall, Architectus, Aurecon and Greenshoot Consulting collaborated on the design for a new cemetery at Harkness, Melton, in what is Melbourne’s largest public cemetery project in over 100 years.
The consortium of leading architecture and landscape design firms was appointed by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) to work in partnership to design Stage 1 works at the brand new, 128-hectare greenfield site adjacent to Gilgai Woodlands Nature Conservation Reserve in Melbourne’s west.
Judges praised the reimagined Harkness Cemetery as “a compelling example of using a development process to recognise and repair harm. The design negotiates the intersection of death with the vibrant needs of the living community, celebrating the heritage and spirituality of diverse cultures.”
We sincerely thank all our partners, collaborators, and judges for this recognition, and congratulate all other winners. Together, we are committed to creating spaces that honour the past while fostering vibrant, inclusive communities for the future.
