Celebrating A Decade of The Rozelle Interchange Parklands

In 2016, McGregor Coxall was engaged by Infrastructure NSW to investigate the Rozelle Interchange, a critical node within the $16.8 billion WestConnex roads program. Originally conceived as an above-ground cloverleaf of elevated roads that would have permanently entrenched the disconnection between surrounding communities, the project presented a rare opportunity to rethink the role of major transport infrastructure. 

Now 10 years later, the masterplan has successfully transformed former industrial land into large scale urban parklands serving the Inner West. By advocating to move the entire interchange underground while tunnel boring machines were already operational, the surface was liberated for nearly 10 hectares of public parkland. This visionary shift delivered superior community outcomes and ecological regeneration without compromising the project’s complex engineering requirements. 

The resulting Rozelle Parklands were built as part of the NSW Government WestConnex interchange project with design development delivered by the John Holland and CPB Contractors team. The site serves as a vital regional connector, providing 14 kilometres of active transport links that seamlessly bridge the gap from Drummoyne to the Sydney CBD. A decade on, the parklands stand as a city-changing precedent for how infrastructure can be leveraged to create a high-performance, sustainable public legacy.
