Hamburg Altona
The City of Hamburg called an invited design competition for the regeneration of a 30ha post industrial site at the centre of the cities quarter Altona. German Railways will vacate the site by 2016. The competition brief was to design a new family friendly mixed use quarter of 380,000m2 with special focus on water sensitive urban design and a new urban park of 8-10ha. Bolles+Wilson from Muenster, invited McGregor Coxall to assist them with the plan. The design strengthens the existing street pattern linking to the surrounding neighbourhoods. A row of 15-level residential towers is ideally positioned towards the west overlooking the new park. The strategy for sustainable water management is to capture as much as possible to relieve sewer overflows from Hamburg’s combined sewer by capturing, detaining and reusing stormwater on site. H20 Park at Altona is designed to minimise stormwater runoff crreating enormous savings to the project in waste water charges.
