Bulimba Barracks News / Project Opening / 27.10.2015

Bulimba Barracks draft masterplan is now on public exhibition.  McGregor Coxall provided Public Realm input into the project which was coupled with WSUD solutions and a ‘network of green’ which provides public access across the entire river front.  The public realm strategy proposes contemporary adaptive reuse principles to embrace the heritage of the site and enhance the riverfront to provide amenities and park space for the local community. A walkable, bicycle friendly street grid connected to the local street network is supported by green infrastructure on streets and along the trunk stormwater corridors. Utilising native vegetation endemic to the river edge, the parklands will enhance the local ecology. The carefully considered masterplan, run in collaboration with Deicke Richards and Buckley Vann also addresses sensitive traffic issues which will impact the height constraints on any future development and ensure the space is consistent with the character of the area.  The 20 hectare site will be sold by the Australian Defence Force and is expected to accomodate up to 850 new dwellings made up of 3-5 storey buildings.  The new riverfront park is proposed to be incorporated into the Bulimba heritage trail with the former defence uses and remnant site structures such as the boat ramp to be interpreted through the public art strategy. The former fabrication workshop and its pavement curtilage provide the foundation for a new pedestrianised community/retail/commercial hub space connected to the CityCat terminal and bus hub.
