Katoomba is the heart of the Blue Mountains, but rising heat and climate pressures are challenging its liveability. Blue Mountains City Council partnered with McGregor Coxall to create a climate-smart masterplan that brings the National Park into the city through more trees, shade, and green infrastructure. Using Australia’s first heat-resilience decision-support system for a regional town, the plan pinpoints where to plant, shade, and install solar to cool key areas by up to 3°C – while saving $2.3M in infrastructure costs. This approach is now a model for building cooler, greener, and more connected communities across regional Australia.
