McGregor Coxall received fifth place and an honourable mention from 440 entries in the Hellinikon International Design Competition held in the year of the Greek Olympics. The design strategy for this 530ha site on the former Athens airport proposes a park and urban development for the 21st century derived directly from the site’s layers of natural and cultural heritage. These layers form the basis for the new physical expression, where urban development is surrounded by constructed ecologies. Collectively, these are a balanced ecosystem where the park is more than picturesque, it provides vital green, energy and water resources for its inhabitants. The design is a fusion of Greek culture and land, a modern park to offset the ecological footprint of the site’s urban realm.
