Set in the historically rich backdrop of Bedminster, Bristol, East Street’s rejuvenation is a masterful blend of heritage preservation and innovative urban planning, spearheaded by McGregor Coxall.
Faced with challenges from post-war decline, retail shifts, and contemporary disruptions like COVID-19, the area needed a strategic facelift. Grounded in community voices, the ‘Placemaking and Public Realm Masterplan’ was born from extensive consultations via the ‘East Street Vision’ platform. This approach birthed six pivotal strategies, championing pedestrian-friendly zones, green initiatives, and cultural touchpoints.
East Street’s transformation is marked by the introduction of 60 street trees, cutting-edge sustainable urban drainage systems, and adaptable public spaces that resonate with both history and future aspirations. This masterplan not only embodies ecological sustainability but also revives the street’s commercial and social vigour. Backed by meticulous analysis, stakeholder collaboration, and a keen sense of place, the project garnered unwavering support from Bristol City Council and the wider community. East Street now stands as a shining example of how community-centric urban regeneration can seamlessly marry past, present, and future.
