Mondrian Apartments
The winner of the 2003 Institute of Architects Wilkinson Award, Mondrian is located on the Chubb site in Green Square, Waterloo, between Powell and Short Streets on a 6605m2 site in South Sydney, this project consists of 124 apartments in four separate buildings arranged east/west around a series of common courtyards. The design philosophy encompassed creation of a contemporary urban residential landscape and public domain responding to the Green Square masterplan objectives for a sustainable environment. Components of the design included a public park with integrated storm water system where roof and pavement water surcharges to the lawn in peak events from a detention tank for onsite infiltration. The water will produce an ephemeral quality reflecting the environmental processes of the site. Adjacent to the water feature is a proposed cafe housed in a renovated 1920’s electrical sub station.
