This design for Albion, Central and Wilmott laneways in the southern entertainment district of the Sydney CBD aims to enhance the public realm to attract fine grain retail tenancies to generate a vibrant public street life by day and night. Building upon the dynamics already established in this precinct, the design tries to enhance facilities for entertainment and night time activities, drawing on activation by the adjacent music and cinema venues as well as other larger and well frequented bars and restaurants. The proposal is to revitalise the lane’s appearance and functions to encourage a diversity of public activities at different times, serving different day and night interests such as lunching, dining, strolling, art appreciation, and safe access. The design embraces sustainable principles to generate a public realm of low ecological impact with an improved and healthier microclimate for the public.
