Sharing stories from Gariwerd
McGregor Coxall has been appointed to design upgraded trailheads along the 160-kilometre Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT).The appointment represents a continuation of works within Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park following the completion of 11 minimalistic hike-in sites in November 2021.A series of trailheads, including major sites located at Mount Zero (North), Halls Gap (Central) and Dunkeld (South), will serve as gateways that offer a sensory transition between urban and natural settings. Landmark thresholds will welcome and farewell hikers along each section of the track, offering more flexibility of access, cultural information, and amenities. First Peoples cultural narratives and co-design will form a central role in design development.“We see unique opportunity to introduce visitors to Gariwerd in a meaningful, exciting way that engages with stories from Country,” said Melbourne Co-Studio Leader and Associate Director, Nick Griffin. “This project represents a unique opportunity to share the rich knowledge of the Djab Wurrung and the Jardwadjali Peoples. We look forward to building on GPT’s existing works alongside Traditional Owners and Parks Victoria, connecting Australians and visitors alike with this continuing living culture.”McGregor Coxall will work closely with Parks Victoria, Barengi Gadjin Land Council, Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, and the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation and other local stakeholders in delivering the GPT trailheads.Since opening, hikers have booked more than 7,200 nights camping along on the trail. By 2025, 34,000 walkers a year are expected to experience Gariwerd’s unique cultural offering, generating $6.39 million in economic benefits and tourism development opportunities. The trailheads are expected to be completed in 2023.Project Team: – McGregor Coxall (Lead Designers)- Ontoit (Construction Industry Specialist)- Brayley & Hayes (Land Surveying)- WT (Quantity Surveying)- JLP Consulting (Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering and Geotech)- Coast to Country (Building Surveying)McGregor Coxall Project Team:- Nick Griffin – Melbourne Co-Studio Leader and Associate Director | Project Director- Michael Polifrone – Associate | Project Manager- Thomas Flugge – Professional Landscape Architect | Project Production – Tian Liang – Graduate Landscape Architect | Project Production
