GREENWAY TO ANCHOR INNER WEST GREENGRID News / Project Milestone / 01.06.2018

After more than 10 years campaigning by the community and GreenWay councils, completion of the GreenWay is a big step closer to reality with the release of the draft GreenWay Master Plan by McGregor Coxall. A multi-use linear corridor that spans 5.8km from Cooks River to Iron cove, the GreenWay sets out a unique, integrated, place-based approach which combines the four main functions of the GreenWay – active travel, ecology, recreation and culture – in each of the six precincts along the corridor.

Following the route of the Inner West Light Rail, the GreenWay features bike paths and foreshore walks, cultural and historical sites, public art, community events, cafes, bushcare sites and a range of parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities. An exciting combination of proposed capital works includes more than 4 ha of revegetation and bank naturalisation, improvements to existing and newly accessible public open space, public art installations along the length of the corridor and the completion of the remaining 3.2 km of GreenWay walking and cycle path from Parramatta Road south through Lewisham West and Dulwich Hill to the Cooks River cycleway at Earlwood.

The draft plan advocates $57 million of staged works, with around $25 million in state and local government funding already committed to priority works due for completion by 2022. Construction of the “central missing links”, from Parramatta Road to Old Canterbury Road, is expected to commence in 2019. It is anticipated that construction of the “southern missing links”, from Old Canterbury Road to the Cooks River, will commence in 2020. It is anticipated that additional works outlined in the draft Plan will be delivered in a staged approach over the next 10 to 15 years, as more funding becomes available. A continuous shared path is proposed along most of the corridor, including a new light weight pedestrian and cycle bridge under Parramatta Road and a tunnel under busy Longport Street.

In line with the Government Architect office NSW vision for a Green Grid network throughout the Sydney Metropolitan area, the Greater Sydney Commission has identified the GreenWay as the number one priority Green Grid project in the Eastern City District Plan (released on 18 March). The priority status for the GreenWay reflects its location in a densely populated and increasingly urbanised inner city region.

Snapshot:

The draft Plan was created using community input and proposes a number of exciting upgrades including:

• A new bridge over the Cooks River

• Improved natural areas and public open spaces in the light rail corridor near Hercules Street in Dulwich Hill

• A safe and accessible walking and cycling route along the length of the corridor

• Creation of new natural areas and public open spaces in the light rail corridor near Lewisham West

• Safer crossings of major roads • Upgraded parklands and new natural areas along the Hawthorne Canal

It is anticipated that the finalised 2018 GreenWay Master Plan will be adopted by Inner West Council in August. The draft plan is available online and open for community comments until 24 June 2018:
