The Acacia Remembrance Sanctuary, Bringelly has won the Future Projects Commercial Award 2015 from World Architecture News. Described by the jury as a pioneering a new cemetery model, the design team together with the client sought to challenge what a contemporary cemetery could be. The response was to create a site-wide experience with a specific focus on natural burials without headstones. The design features elevated walkways and walled gardens to promote the protection of the bush ecology and GPS markers are used to identify burial sites. The design is set up much like life. Life is a journey. The experience of entering this site is a journey,” said Philip Coxall. “The engagement with the landscape is a focus at every point along the journey.”
