Leichhardt Green, an urban regeneration project in Sydney’s inner western suburb of Leichhardt, now has planning approval and is at detailed design stage. McGregor Coxall, in collaboration with Bates Smart, developed a landscape concept that references the site’s industrial heritage and incorporates sustainability principles. Located on the site of the former Kolotex garment factory and Labelcraft printing facility, Greenland Group’s master-planned community includes a mix of residential buildings with retail at ground level. The landscape component maximises solar access and through-site connectivity, interspersed with native vegetation in a series of private and public spaces. The site’s industrial past is referenced through choice of materials such as natural stone pavers and steel edging as well as displays of salvaged rubble gabion walls from the original buildings. A central courtyard features terraced native gardens, a lap pool and BBQ areas for residents. The landscape plan extends to the surrounding streetscape, incorporating the same natural stone pavers and green infrastructure such as bioswales and deep soil zones designed to collect and treat stormwater and runoff. The development also contributes to the Council’s cycling, walking and public transport strategy.
