Project Description: Hobart is a frontier city, an isolated metropolis sustaining itself on the cold and beautiful fringes of Australia and Antarctica. It occupies fragile territory on the edge of civilisation. The environmental resources of the rugged, forest covered Tasmanian State, have always been the major economic driver of Hobart’s old industrial economy, shaping it’s urban form. But old economies eventually give way to new economies, and the new forces of urban change that accompany them. Today, following international ratification of the Kyoto protocol, cities that harness the emerging capital of global markets from the two year old, $22 billion carbon economy have the power to regenerate and modernise their established habits and urban form. Using the unique and internationally renowned hundred metre high Mountain Ash forests of Tasmania’s bio-region, Hobart city has a frontier opportunity to reinvent itself.
