Project Description: As the Landscape Architecture consultant, McGregor Coxall designed the entry courts, surrounding gardens, and rooftop garden for the new Taichung City Government building in Taipei. The main entry plaza is activated by water jets spouting from the paved surface shaded by formal rows of large canopy trees linking the site to the surrounding transport infrastructure. The matrix of Taiwan cherry trees, lawn, reflection ponds, white granite paving and precast concrete seating of the surrounding gardens at the base of the building provides a shady retreat for staff and visitors to escape the surrounding harsh, hot urban environment. To increase the volume of ‘green’ space framing the building and to provide an opportunity for storm water infiltration for run-off, all overflow parking areas have been turfed.
