Project Description: McGregor Coxall worked with Tweed Shire Council to develop a strategy and master plan for the redevelopment of Proudfoots Lane in the centre of the Murwillumbah CBD. The brief entailed regenerating a back service laneway dominated by carparking and loading zones into a pedestrian friendly artisan precinct. The strategy aims to rejuvenate the laneway and local economy by encouraging local businesses, artists, craftsmen and tradesmen to use the many ‘quirky’ spaces fronting the laneway as workshops and galleries. There is already a vibrant arts community in the country town and the laneway has potential for weekend market use. The master plan re-organises the parking and loading zone requirements of the laneway to create opportunities for cafes, workshops and community facilities to be located in the precinct. The master plan also incorporates water sensitive urban design with new rain gardens for storm water infiltration designed to filter pollutants from the road before they enter the nearby Tweed River. The rain gardens support street trees that are watered by road run off.
