Project Description: A magical place where visitors travel back 4 billion years to experience the dawn of plants, separation of the supercontinents and the evolution of trees. Located in the nation’s capital, Pangaia is a spectacular Arboretum of colour and wonder with a visitor centre, restaurants, cafes, concert venue, convention and exhibition area, learning centre and research facilities. 180 million years ago the tectonic plates of the great landmass Pangaea folded and buckled to form two separate supercontinents, Laurasia and Gondwana. It was this separation that led to the birth of uniquely different botanical families on each. These families evolved further into new species when the super continents divided into seven smaller continents. Pangaia locates the torn supercontinents on either side of the site’s central valley. This physical separation then provided a theatre in which to tell the story of the impact of land mass division on botanical evolution.
