Project Description: mcg+c were selected to prepare an urban design plan to regenerate Miller Street and Victoria Cross into the major public space in North Sydney. The issues encountered are typical of those facing many urban centres in Australian cities where inequity in the amount of space provided for roads vs. pedestrians degrades the appeal of the environment. North Sydney is struggling to compete with other decentralised commercial centres and is suffering from growing vacancy rates, corporate relocations, street crime, vehicle/pedestrian incidents and this plan is intended to spearhead a renewal of its’ tired image. A series of layers were intertwined to achieve an iconic contemporary, coherent and robust design for Victoria Cross. The project included a strategic rebranding of the centres’ palette of materials such as, bus stops, site furniture, signage, artwork, planting together with improvements in the quality of the urban ecological systems, in particular, stormwater, and biodiversity.
